After the horse has bolted
The Editor, Sir:

Alas, after decades of hibernation the Government realises that squatting is an epidemic that needs an immediate solution. But this problem did not come upon us suddenly, but grew from a molehill into a seemingly insurmountable mountain because the leaders whom we entrusted with authority through a democratic process lacked the political will, vision and foresight to deal with the issue as it arose.

Now the Tourism Enhancement Fund has approved $1billion to formalise squatter communities. Money that could be put to better uses. Our MPs, mayors and town clerks need to be held responsible for the mess they have allowed to fester.

How else will we rid ourselves of this reactive, disorganised culture that causes us to fix a problem only when it has got out of hand and cost us twice as much?

I am, etc.,
