Coaster-bus drivers protest
Private bus crews which ply routes that include Half-Way Tree and Constant Spring Road pulled their vehicles from the road for more than two hours yesterday in protest.

The Coaster-bus drivers and conductors were protesting against what they claimed was the unfair treatment being meted out by representatives of the Transport Authority and the police.

"This can't continue," declared bus crews as they parked their vehicles along Constant Spring Road in the vicinity of Merle Grove High School.

The protest grew tense as police personnel on the scene attempted to arrest two of the protesters.

For minutes, traffic was reduced to a crawl, as the police and protesters engaged in a tug-o-war with the two men the police attempted to arrest.

As the protest seemed set to escalate news came that the Transport Authority had agreed to suspend all enforcement activities until after a meeting scheduled for next Wednesday.

Problems

"It can't be right for you go to the examination depot and they pass your bus as fit for the road for the next six months and the next day the Transport Authority stop you and say there is a problem," lamented one bus driver.

"And even if you fix the problem and you on the road the next day, the same inspector stop you even though you have proof that the problem he identified was fixed," another driver added.

"We tired of the problems with the police and the Transport Authority," the drivers said even as they agreed to return to work pending the outcome of the meeting.
