Drastic cut in college subsidies
The Editor, Sir:

Almost two years ago, school fees were abolished and we very happy; but little did we know that some other sector would have to pay for it.

Well, in some cases, the students of the teachers' colleges have to foot this bill. The Government previously paid part of the fees for the students at teachers' colleges. That portion has now been reduced drastically. It's so bad that now The Mico College fee for diploma students (the last set) is $160,000 for school fees, and $80,000 for boarding. Last year, the school fee was $120,000, and boarding was $40,000.00. That is a 100 per cent increase in boarding fees. Where else in the world do we see fees increasing by 100 per cent?

No longer cheaper

Teachers' colleges were seen as cheaper than university, but it is obvious that they are now almost on par. How are parents going to afford this? The Students Loan Bureau will foot the bill for school fees, but applicants have to find the money for boarding.

What is going to happen to students leaving high school whose option was to go teachers' college because it was seen as the cheaper option?
