Roy Letts wins Sunrite pool tourney

Roy Letts from Kingston defeated Mandeville's Fernando Anderson 3-1 to win the Sunrite/Presto Last Man Standing pool tournament last weekend at the Mystix Sports Bar, 78 3/4 Hagley Park Road.

Letts, who went through the eight-ball tournament unbeaten, capped the first prize of $50,000 and trophy donated by Sunrite, while Anderson picked up $20,000 and a trophy for second.

In the play-off for third between the losing semi-finalists, Ewart Hall from Hot Shots, currently the island's top-ranked player by virtue of winning three of the seven ranking pool tournament so far this season, crushed Michael Jolly 4-0 to secure the $10,000 prize, while Jolly received $6,000 for fourth.

Players finishing from fifth to eighth place - Rohan McDonald, Michael Chin, Calhoun Melville and Wade Young - picked up $3,000 each, while Francine Cardosa from Devil's Angels, received $5,000 as the best female player.

The next major pool tournament is the Markham/Construction Management Limited and OCS Electrical-sponsored doubles on June 20 and 21 at Hot Shots, 103 Constant Spring Road. This offers a first prize of $80,000.

Lyssons face Prospect in major league final

The final of the Captain's Bakery-sponsored St Thomas Major league will be played today at York Oval.

Lyssons, who avenged their mid-season final defeat by beating Kool Kat 1-0, face Prospect, who topped the preliminary with 37 points, in the 30.m. final.

The winner will walk away with $100,000 and the Captain's Bakery Trophy and move on to the Eastern Confederation Super League play- off, which is slated to begin on Wednesday.

Leading goal scorer is Dushane Robinson of Yallahs United with 12 goals.

Old Harbour victorious

Old Harbour Pythons recorded the biggest win, a 74-67 beating of Duhaney Park, in the latest round of SDC/INSPORTS southern basketball league.

Phillip Reid scored 23 points and collected 15 rebounds while Clinton Knight sank 22 points for the winners.

Radrie Sinclair had 15 points for the losers.

In another game, Spanish Town Spartans with nine points from Alton Walker, beat Seaview Flames 54-41.

Brave Smilers beat Swift Angels

In the Modern Rubber Stamp/Joy McLeod Custom Brokers women's league, Brave Smilers beat Swift Angels 60-48.

Sasha Dixon scored 18 points and collected 10 rebounds for the winners.

Waulgrovian Bullets trashed Metro Belles 51-39. National player Oberon Pitterson had a game-high 25 points and got seven rebounds

Wendy Wallace netted 10 points for the losers.

Hagley Park advance to quarter-finals

Hagley Park snatched the last quarter-finals spot in the INSPORTS/JN Money Transfer Community netball competition after a narrow 33-30 victory over Delmax in their rescheduled game at Cockburn Primary and Junior High on Wednesday.

The exciting contest went down to the wire as expected as both teams had a chance to advance.

Both teams held the lead at the end of the first two quarters and were tied at 21-21 at the end of the third. However, Hagley Park, who led Delmax only on goal-difference prior to the match, pulled away down the stretch to clinch a berth in the last eight.

UTech/Papine, Determine Strikers and East Queen Park are the other teams to qualify from Zone One, while Flames, Alexander Strikers, Selassie and Rollington Town form the quartet to move on from Zone Two.

The quarter-finals are set to begin on June 21.

Netball knockout serves off tomorrow

Action in the INSPORTS/JN Money Transfer Community netball knockout begins tomorrow with four matches.

Flames tackle Young Star, UTech/Papine face Castleton, Determine Strikers square off against Mega Angels, Alexander Strikers do battle with Long Mountain, while Selassie will visit Mona Commons Strikers. Delmax travel to Rollington Town, Hagley Park host Swallowfield, and East Queen Park entertain Whitfield.

Holy Family win mini basketball title

Holy Family defeated Lannaman's Prep 18-6 to win the Kingston Zone of the 2009- INSPORTS Primary/Prep School mini-basketball competition at the National Stadium Courts on Wednesday.

Holy Family, had, earlier in the day defeated St Patrick's Primary 16-11 to win the primary division, while Lannaman's Prep took the prep school category after beating Mavisville 15-3.

The National championships will be set for Friday June 12 with fours teams from the parishes of Kingston, St Catherine and St James taking part.

A new champion will be crowned after defending champions Covenant Prep were eliminated. Holy Family are the top seed.

Watson Grove,Rodwood clash

Watson Grove will be hard- pressed to preserve their 100 per cent win record in the Senator Arthur Williams-sponsored Portmore Under-15 Football League when they tackle unbeaten Rodwood United at the Watson Grove playing field today at 1:30 p.m.

This game and the other four matches on the fixture were originally scheduled for tomorrow, but the organisers pushed the games forward because Jamaica's senior footballers will be hosting the Panama national team in a friendly game at the National Stadium.

Watson Grove, the league leaders with five consecutive wins (15 points), on the trot, including a 7-0 thrashing of Hellshire United last Sunday, are expected to get the better of Rodwood.

In other games, Cumberland, fresh from a 10-0 swamping of Christian Pen, seek another goal feast as they take on Hellshire United at the Cumberland playing field, while, fourth place Wanderers are expected to beat strugglers Portmore Pines in a 3:30 p.m. encounter also at the Cumberland playing field.

JDF march on

Despite their first and only loss of the season, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) signalled their intention for back-to-back Business House Volleyball titles following victory in the third and final one-day rally at the University of the West Indies Gymnasium on Sunday.

After securing both the first and second rallies, the soldiers went all out for the hat-trick, winning eleven games of twelve. They finished with 34 points for the day and claimed the overall rally crown with 30 points.

Coach of the JDF, Gatasheu Bonner, said they were expected to win most of the rallies, as they are one of the top teams in the tournament.

"We are always ready, as we are always in training. This year, the teams were more competitive, so we definitely had to go all out to win," Bonner said.

Bank of Jamaica, who placed second in Sunday's rally with an 8-4 record, also finished runners-up in the overall standings. National Water Commission had a 7-5 record for third with 26 points and 21 overall.

Guardian "A" finished with a 6-6 record and 24 points. However, UWI claimed fourth position for the day with a plus-one differential while Guardian "A" had a minus-five point differential. They, however, took fourth spot overall, with 16 points. UWI finished with six points, this being their only rally.

AMECO, who placed sixth in the rally with a 3-9 record, came in fifth overall with 10 points, while Guardian "B" finished with a one and 11 win/loss record. The team ended with three overall points.

The teams will now turn their attention to the Reggae Jammin' Indoor League which gets under way on June 7. This will feature teams playing best-of-three set games.

The Jamaica Defence Force are the defending league champions.

Reggae Jammin Foods are the title sponsors for the Indoor league along with Flora, Supreme Ventures Ltd, Matate Holdings, Cooyah and The Jamaica Biscuit Company.
