An indomitable, resilient spirit

Hensley

The Editor, Sir:

Congratulations are in order to the most amazing mother I could have ever been blessed with. At the youthful age of 58, Pauline Hensley has finally completed her first degree in management studies and accounts at the University of the West Indies.

After raising three children on her own, who have turned out to be a lawyer and two teachers of mathematics, Pauline continued to pursue one of her dreams - to earn her degree. This, in itself, is nothing special, as many like her have done the same. What separates her from the average is that indomitable, determined, and resilient spirit which she possesses.

During her tenure at the university, she failed math twice but, through fierce determination, she was able finally to conquer it. However, one final course stood ominously between her and her degree. It was a computer course. The first time she failed it she was sad but she kept trying and attempted the course again. The second time she failed the course she was devastated but she somehow found the inner strength to try her hand at it again. The third time she failed it, she cried, which is something my mother is rarely seen doing. However, Pauline's spirit would not be dampened. She went at it again and, finally on the fourth try, she achieved success.

To all single mothers, like Pauline, never give up on your children no matter the challenges you may face in raising them. Also, never give up on your dreams. Just remember that the harder the battle, is the sweeter the victory.

I am, etc.,
