University Singers traces the evolution of music

The University Singers.

The University Singers presents its annual concert season at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. The choir is celebrating 51 years with a selection of music that charts the evolution of Jamaican and Caribbean music. The concert runs until June 28.

Audiences will be entertained by the melodies of the singers who have over the years presented excellence in chorale music representing various genres. Under the direction of musical director Noel Dexter, artistic director Professor Rex Nettleford and a list of composers and arrangers, the group explores a new style of presentation which complements their music. Though a departure, the style continues the tradition of choral theatre for which they have become known.

Various eras

The music has been chosen to represent various eras including the Taino, European, African and the music that evolved from the bringing together of these various groups such as folk and religious traditions. The programme also covers music from Jamaica's popular culture, including arrangements of ska, rocksteady, reggae and dancehall pieces.

The concert season runs Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 and 8 p.m.
