While agreeing with some of the main issues pointed out by the editorial on Monday, the treatment of the statement made by the minister of security, Senator Dwight Nelson, was far too placid.
For the minister to even suggest that police officers in any way are above the law and should be afforded more legal right than other members of society is unjust. Additionally, this statement has the potential to create an even greater divide between citizens and the police, as well as fuel the corruption that already exists in the force.
Irresponsible statement
Such a statement is irresponsible and unconscionable, to say the least, and coming from anyone else, it would have been met with full condemnation by the media. To chalk it up as just exuberance and an attempt to placate the restless police force is doing a disservice to citizens of this country and hard-working, disciplined members of the police force.
I implore the members of the force not to take the minister's hyped up sugar-coated promises (which most politicians are known for) to heart but instead, to redouble their efforts in demanding their pound of flesh.
I am, etc.,
