Grilled lamb, chicken, mahimahi and pork were in abundance at Sunday's Jack Daniel's All Jamaica Grill Off.
Dressed in his usual elegant black and white, Jack Daniel's was the centre of attention. The stout, dapper dresser, doesn't mind if you simply call him Jack.
The decades-old American whiskey can fit in almost anywhere, even in his distinctive bottle. He is known for the very simple cocktail, Jack and Coke, just as well as he is known as a grilling ingredient.
So it goes without saying that the suave Westerner was right at home at the Jack Daniel's All Jamaica Grill Off 2009. Hosted at a new venue, Devon House East Lawns, the guest of honour could be seen from every angle at the venue.
The meat and seafood were piled high on 18 contestants' grills on Sunday.
The competition got under way at noon with participants grilling up treats for patrons and judges.
Grand champions
The grand champions were Jo Jo's Jerk Pit and More and reserve champions (second runner-up) were Bonanza Grill.
Patrons were treated to samples from the contestant's booths. If that wasn't enough food, the Jack Daniel's booth offered an abundance of the same meat and seafood prepared by Island Caterers.
The children were not left out. The Kibbler Kiddies' Area offered activities such as a bounce-about, a mechanical bull and face-painting. Sno cones, cotton candy and popcorn were there for snacking. Adults also took advantage of the snacks.
Samples of grilled jumbo shrimp were provided by Rainforest Seafood. Hebrew National provided hot dog samples; Hart Hill provided orange and grapefruit juice samples.
But back to the meat of the matter; the People's Choice Award, which was voted on by the patrons present, went to Go 4 God.
In the seafood category, Fire Starters placed first for their grilled mahimahi. Second and third place went to Culinary Ninjas and Jack's Black Sheep, respectively.
In the chicken category, Go 4 God took the first-place prize. Rustique, Travelling Grill and Jack's Black Sheep placed second and third, respectively.
Jack's Black Sheep showed they knew something about lamb, when they placed first in that category. Second and third place went to the Bonanza Grill and The Sheriff, respectively.
Pork category
The pork category went to Grill Gurus; second and third place went to Fyah Water Grillaz and Jo Jo's Jerk Pit and More, respectively.
TGI Friday's walked away with the prize for the Jack Daniel's sauce competition for a sauce which had to be prepared on site and included Jack Daniel's whiskey.
Bad Dawgs were the winners of the curve ball challenge for their cocktail, Jack and Jill.
Jo Jo's Jerk Pit won the prize for best booth.

Go 4 God was tops with their chicken but when the Food team visited, Garfield Sutherland was making sure the pork was just the way he wanted it to be.
