It is with great elation I write to congratulate the efforts of the three young male debaters of the Garvey Maceo High School debating team on their convincing win of the TVJ's National Debating Competition. What a victory!
I was blown away by their eloquence, understanding of the moot, argumentative tactics and just sheer charisma. I read about their victory in The Gleaner, but to see how they won - it was all the more gratifying.
It is examples like these that keep convincing me more and more that all is not lost with our education system, with its limited resources. If we can encourage excellence such as this by believing it is possible, regardless of scarce resources, our students will continue to produce and lift the standards of their schools high.
Lest we forget, it is this education framework that has produced and continues to produce scholars and world-class dignitaries in many shapes and forms. Notwithstanding, the fact that our schools could do with more and efficient resources, in the meantime, let us work with what we have and continue to engender a culture of excellence among our students. Let us help them to believe in themselves and the potential for greatness they all possess.
I am, etc.,
Sacha Lambert
