Coal is not suitable
The Editor, Sir:

In response to Winston Hay's letter advocating coal as a viable power source for Jamaica, I would like to say categorically that he is totally wrong for many reasons.

Jamaica would have to use foreign reserves to import the coal; coal burning would contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions hence to climate change; Jamaica has abundant under-utilised renewable-energy potential; there needs to be maximum use of energy saving/ efficiency options before new generating plants are built.

Natural gas is a better option if more fossil-fuel based generation capacity is necessary, being both cleaner and available from a regional partner, Trinidad.

I am, etc.,
