Bite worse than bark in dogfight ads
The Editor, Sir:

I am dismayed to see advertisements in The Gleaner and Observer newspapers portraying the competition between both publications as a dogfight.

My disappointment comes from the fact that, you are depicting 'man's best friend' - dogs - in a negative light, all done with a view to denigrate your worthy competitor.

You must take heed, because in a dogfight someone gets bitten and in this case it will not be the newspapers. The real 'bite' is the negative public opinion that is promoted as it relates to our canine friends. These cartoons pander to that part of our culture which believes that it is OK to promote and watch a dogfight, especially as the cartoons attract children who may not understand.

Healthy competition

One can recall the recent case of the American National Football League player, Michael Vick, who saw nothing wrong in promoting dogfights using pit bulls. I am sure that our friends at the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will also take exception to the continued negative portrayal.

It is my hope that some other format will be utilised to display the healthy competition between our two major newspapers.

I am, etc.,

JOSEPH AUXILLY
