Janice McDonald (right), Miss Brooks Bakery, Savanna-la-Mar, presents a potted plant to a senior citizen at the St Matthews Anglican Church in Allman Town. Janice was one of the Miss Teen Jamaica finalists who attended the service with their mothers and contest organisers. The girls presented gifts to 16 of the oldest mothers at the service. - contributed


Professor Frederick Hickling (left), his wife, Dr Hilary Hickling, and son Akindele Hickling. Professor Hickling last week received the American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Fellow Award for his more than 32 years of hard work in psychiatry, locally and internationally. He is the only recipient of this honour from the Caribbean region in the close to 200-year history of the organisation. He achieved demonstrable excellence in seven of eight categories assessed, including academia, clinical work, not-for-profit work and publication. The eighth category is linked to North American residency status and was, therefore, not applicable. The ceremony took place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, on May 19 at the APA Convocation Ceremony of Distinguished Fellows.- Contributed

Bryan, a Jamaican resident in the United States of America, is a Flair columnist and high-school counsellor.
