Lorna Golding, wife of the prime minister, rallied parents in an impassioned plea Tuesday to protect their children from sex predators.
Golding even slipped into vernacular during her impromptu address to the audience at the launch of the Ananda Alert at Jamaica House Tuesday.
Obviously touched by the tears of Nardia Campbell, mother of Ananda Dean, who was kidnapped and murdered last year, Golding called on all Jamaicans to play their part in protecting children from predators.
"You are to watch yuh pickney, your daughter. Do not take your eyes off her. Yes, she has a right to go to Half-Way Tree and doesn't have a right for a man to touch, but they bright (rude)," Golding said.
"I'm very passionate about my children and I don't allow my daughter to go to pajama parties. Mothers, stay with them, it's not a joke.
"Ask the grandmothers in the community to watch them with you. You have got to be proactive," she added.
Multi-agency system
The Ananda Alert, named after the slain Ananda Dean, is a multi-agency system set up to search for missing children.
Recounting incidents from her childhood, Golding argued that sexual predators have been on the loose in Jamaica for years, but had become more brazen in recent years.
"Let us have a networking with the grandmothers, the mothers and even if you are not talking to the next-door neighbour, just say to her, 'Watch her for me'," said Golding.
