Let us give the Multi-purpose Stadium to the University of Technology (UTech) or let the vandals have it. Who has it now and at whose expense? Trelawny would do well with the educational injection. I quite understand that the stadium was intended for entertainment purposes - entertainment that would pay for itself and also pay for the upkeep of the stadium.
It has been two years since the construction of the facilities and it seems to me that we are nowhere near attracting the kinds of sporting activities that would make the stadium self-sustaining.
Balanced approach
I appreciate the balanced and sensible approach that is being taken by veteran sports administrator and former national cricketer, Jerry Reid. He is reported to have said that if UTech were prepared to take care of the upkeep of the facility and at the same time make it available when needed by the various sporting bodies, he would support the proposed lease.
That sounds like a sensible approach. This would be quite a partnership between education and sports development. A win-win outcome is what I would deem it.
There are hundreds of youngsters in western Jamaica who cannot afford to study in Kingston. What an opportunity this would provide! The spin-offs would be enormous. The benefits would not be seasonal but ongoing and lasting.
As a son of Trelawny I urge the government to close the deal with UTech and let this well needed training injection take place and change a white elephant into a training giant.
I am, etc.,
