BEAUTY - The right foundation

Make-up should enhance, not detract from the natural look or complexion.

The key to getting any look right is choosing the correct foundation. Remember, it is the foundation, so getting it wrong can throw off the entire look. A properly made-up face should never look like it has been embalmed. According to make-up artist and skin-care consultant, Camille Stephenson, the two main factors in choosing the type of foundation you need will be dictated by your skin type and the amount of coverage needed.

Skin types

Foundation comes in a variety of forms. There is liquid, creme, powder and creme to powder. Creme to powder (pancake) gives more coverage than liquid.

Dry skin

It's best to get a creme or liquid foundation that will moisturise your skin. Look for products that hydrate and moisturise to get the best results for your skin type.

Oily skin

Look for liquid or powder foundation that says oil-free or oil-control on the label. With oily skin, if you do not choose the right foundation, you will 'shine', which isn't good, so look for one that has a matte finish. If your personal preference is liquid, Stephenson advises choosing one that says 'oil free'.

Combination

Determine if you are more dry or oily, then go with a foundation that leans towards that skin type. If you can't decide, creme or powder foundations are great for combination-type skin.

Normal

You can choose whatever form of foundation you feel more comfortable with.

The selection

After you have determined your skin type and the amount of coverage you need, the most important step is selecting the right shade.

Stephenson said testing on the hand is a no-no as the shade of the hands is always darker than the face. She advises testing the foundation where you will wear it; on your face. Never go darker or lighter than your natural tone. "Take three shades that are closest to your complexion and test them on the jawline. The one that you cannot see is the one to choose," she explained.

Also, the lighting in most beauty stores does not give a true reflection of the colour. Check the shade at the door or outside the store, where you can see it in natural light.

A big no-no: Never choose a shade that's lighter than your natural skin tone.
