Airport drug bust

Llewellyn

CUSTOMS OFFICIALS, assisted by narcotics and other law enforcement personnel, seized more than 165 pounds of cocaine and 175 pounds of compressed ganja at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, yesterday morning.

Kingfish liaison officer Sergeant Jubert Llewellyn told The Sunday Gleaner that the seizure was made during an operation at the airport shortly before 8 a.m.

Unclaimed suitcases

"The team was paying attention to two suitcases which were placed on a luggage cart, but after a considerable length of time had elapsed, and no one claimed the luggage, the narcotics team moved in and seized them," Llewellyn said.

He told The Sunday Gleaner that when searched, the drugs were discovered.

Llewellyn surmised that the drug was destined for a Virgin Atlantic flight which was scheduled to depart late yesterday afternoon.

There were no arrests.

Meanwhile, the Narcotics Police incinerated some 12,000 kilograms of ganja and more than 369 kilograms of cocaine at a secluded site in Kingston yesterday.

He said the drugs were confiscated as evidence in several cases before the courts.

However, he said with those cases being disposed of, a decision was made to destroy the drugs which have been in storage for more than six years.
