Defending champions Kingston were well-placed to retain their Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA)/Sagicor National Primary, All-Age and Junior High Schools Athletic Championships title at the end of day one of the two-day meet at the National Stadium yesterday.
Kingston, who won last year's championships by one point, were on top with 65 points, seven ahead of Portland (58). They were followed by St Andrew (54) Manchester (38) Trelawny (33.5), St Catherine (28) and St Elizabeth (23.5)
Shot put open
Althea Russell of St Andrew won the girls' shot put open with a throw of 8.69m ahead of Amanda Tyrell of Portland (8.62m) and Catherine Heavens of Hanover (8.50m). Clarendon's Sidane Dawkins captured the boys' equivalent with a throw of 12.14m in front of Clarendon's Rajhea Berlin (11.80m) and Aldane Harris of St Ann (11.62).
Kemar Johnson of Kingston won the boys' high open with a leap 1.70m ahead of his teammate Maurice Harrison (1.69m) and St Andrew's Anthony Hamilton (1.60m).
St Andrew's Renea Medley won the girls' equivalent in 1.50m ahead of Kingston's Shadey Stewart (1.45m) and Kristina Bennett of St Catherine (1.45m).
Nickeisha Gordon of St Elizabeth captured the girls' long jump open with a leap of 5.08m, beating Kingston's Kerry-Ann Richardson (5.02m) and Runique Gray (4.96m).
