Welterweight Sakima Mul-lings and superheavyweight Andre Reid were the star performers on Saturday night at the Burger King Amateur Boxing Series show at Ken's Wildflower, Portmore.

The nine-bout card was a thrilling affair that had the hundreds of enthusiastic spectators cheering throughout the night.

Mullings, who returned to Jamaica from the United States recently, created waves in local amateur boxing circles when he defeated reigning champion Rikardo Smith. On Saturday he took on the No. 2 man, Ricardo Brown, of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and gave a masterful display.

Brown used his jabs effectively and won the first round. From the start of the second round, however, Mullings kept the action at close range, where his body attacks and counter rights to the head made him dominant. He eventually cruised to an easy points victory.

In the super heavy contest, Reid and his rival, Jamaro Nooks, from Bruising Gym, both had scores to settle. In previous encounters, Reid won the first battle and Nooks the second.

On Saturday, Reid's jabs made the difference. He kept throwing and scoring with his jabs and going into round three it was clear that Nooks needed a knockout to win. That did not happen and Reid went home with the decisive victory and a 2-1 lead in their personal battle for supremacy.

In other bouts on the card, junior boxer Shaqueille Linton from Stanley Couch defeated his gym colleague Raheim Palmer; Fabian Mills (JDF) defeated Julan Brown, (Bruising Gym); Dukey Rowe (Stanley Couch) stopped Dwayne Blake in the second round; Graffique King (JDF) scored an unpopular decision over Cleon Phillips; Oraine Walters (Job Walters) upset Camion Goldson; Michael Holmes (Bruising Gym) upset highly fancied Oshane Reid and Kirmarni Campbell (Job) defeated Kereem Campbell of the JDF.
