August Town captured the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSA-FA) Super League competition, following their 6-0 thrashing of Maverley/Hughenden on Saturday at the University of the West Indies Bowl.
Despite finishing the season tied on 49 points with Cavalier, who demolished the relegated Police National 8-0, August Town claimed the title by virtue of having a superior goal difference.
August Town, demoted from the Premier League last season, were led to victory courtesy of two goals each from Nicholas Smith (78th and 85th) and substitute Nicholas McCreath (81st and 85th). Ezekiel Shaw (10th) and Aphas Bernard (63rd) were the other scorers for the champions.
"I am elated because it is always feels good to be a champion and a winner," said Calvert Fitzgerald, coach of August Town.
"I think that we played a good season because we only lost one game and that was to Cavalier and we also scored a lot of goals in the first round, which helped us to win this title ahead of them," Fitzgerald added.
Fitzgerald noted that he was nervous prior to the start of the game, but he was always confident his team could pull it off.
"I know that once our players executed the game plan we were going to win this game and we got an early goal which enabled us to take control of the game," he reasoned.
The Digicel Premier League play-offs begin in two weeks' time and according to Fitzgerald, his players are optimistic.
"I am pretty confident heading to the play-offs because I think that we have a good team that is capable of making it back to the Premier League," he said. "We are going to intensify our preparations in terms of our physical application because our fitness level needs a lot more improvement."
Cavalier were led to the victory with a hat-rick from Locksley Thompson (49th, 68th, 79th ). Richard Harris (74th, 84th), Oneil Morrison (52nd), Kemar Mullings (46th) and Phillip Riley (48th) were the other scorers.
Santos, who finished third in the standings on 44 points, were held to a 1-1 draw by fourth-place Jamaica Defence Force (37), while fifth-place Bull Bay edged relegated Liguanea United (16)1-0.
In other matches, Constant Spring (31) defeated Duhaney Park (21) 3-1 and Mountain View (18) edged Real Mona (28) 1-0.
