Women's movement happy about tax changes
The women's arm of the Opposition has called the Government's decision to rescind the imposition of general consumption tax on books and some breadbasket goodies "a small victory for women".

President of the People's National Party Women's Movement, Jennifer Edwards, said women, particularly those who run single-parent households, would have borne the brunt of the financial hit from anticipated price rises.

"The movement anxiously awaits the publication of the full list of items exempt from GCT with the hope that other goods that are used by the poor and middle classes are exempt," said Edwards.

The women's arm boss lauded Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller and others lobby groups who put pressure on the Government to roll back the tax decision, which was articulated by Finance Minister Audley Shaw when he opened the Budget Debate last month.

The movement has also cautioned the Government to analyse, in the future, the impact of any tax package on vulnerable groups before implementation.
