Heartbreak over visa denial
The Editor, Sir:

I have been living in the United States on a student visa and, after years of struggle and hard work, I have now accomplished my goal of being a registered nurse. My graduation will be this month. As the only child of my parents living abroad, I sent a letter inviting them to attend my graduation so they could witness their only daughter of four graduating from college.

I told them to take the letter to the US ambassy in Kingston along with proof of my current status in the country and also a copy of a letter from my college in order to obtain a visitor's visa to attend my graduation. Can you believe they were denied the visa? Now where is compassion and family values?

I couldn't believe that the US embassy would deny a parent an opportunity to attend a child's graduation.

Now we are not rich, by any means, but we are not the worst either. My parents both have their own businesses, own a home, automobiles and have enough cash to survive, so I can't see why they weren't granted at least a single-entry visa.

I cried for days knowing my parents would not able to witness this moment.

I am, etc.,
