Gunshots rang out at the Nelson Mandela Park in Half-Way Tree, St Andrew, yesterday, forcing commuters to scurry for cover during an attack on a vendor.
According to the St Andrew Central police, about 2:30 p.m., the vendor who also owns a taxi which operates in the area was approached by two armed men as he sat in the park.
The men immediately opened fire, shooting him several times before firing their guns at a district constable who tried to intervene, The Gleaner has learnt.
The men then escaped.
Condition not known
The injured man was rushed to hospital. Up to press time last night, his condition was not known.
Another vendor, who claims to have witnessed the incident, recounted hearing a barrage of bullets and seeing persons running from all angles as the men attacked their target.
"A right a my stall mi deh when mi hear di shot dem and see people a run up and dung like dem mad. Everybody run out a di park, nobody not even stay fi see nutt'n," the vendor said.
