WESTERN BUREAU:The spirit of the late Barbara Lulich-Drakulich was present along with a storyboard depicting Usain Bolt and an all-female team led by young Olympian Shelly-Ann Fraser. Lulich-Drakulich, who was part of the Mystic Mountain team, died recently.
This was the scene at Ocho Rios' Mystic Mountain as the marquee attraction along with Digicel Business immortalised Jamaican athletes and Olympians paying homage to their prowess at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The men's 4x100 metres relay team of Usain Bolt, Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell on display was a sight to behold as Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, co-owners, Mike Drakulich and Horace Clarke, and Digicel CEO Mark Linehan unveiled the fantastic exhibit in the attraction's Athletics Pavilion.
"Everything here was built by Jamaicans and inspired by Jamaicans," boasted Mike Drakulich with pride as he spoke of the influence his Jamaican friend, Olympian Lennox Miller, had on his life while they both attended Southern California University in the 1960s.
Coming from a heritage of athletics and having shared the same alma mater as Don Quarry, it comes as no surprise that he and his partners would dedicate more than half of the Mystic Mountain attraction to Jamaican athleticism, including the famous bobsled team.
A new addition to the 10-month-old attraction was the presentation of a pewter mug autographed by Olympian Byron La Beach.
La Beach was the alternate member of Jamaica's 4x400 metres relay team that won that event at the 1952 Olympic Games, giving Jamaica its first gold medal. The winning team comprised Les Laing, George Rhoden, Arthur Wint and Herb McKenley.
