GOVERNOR GENERAL Patrick Allen installed Jamaica's youngest custos, Dr. David Stair, in Hanover yesterday.
Stair, who celebrates his 54th birthday later this month, succeeds acting Custos Enid Gonsalves, who held that position for years.
The ceremony was held at the former Jockey garment factory at Haughton Industrial Estate in Lucea.
The new custos called on persons in leadership positions to lead by example.
"If our message is to be heard, it must be seen in our actions," Stair said. "If we send mixed signals to our young, fertile minds that need to be moulded, then we should not wonder why people behave the way they do. Those of us who demand discipline must practise it. We cannot have it both ways," he said.
abandoned values
Custos Stair said the country had abandoned traditional values and dishonesty had become more pervasive in the political and commercial world.
Stair also challenged Jamaicans to put the country first, despite religious and political persuasions.
"I wish to be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem. Let us remember we are Jamaicans first," he added.
