( L - R ) Dixon, Mcgibbon
The Book Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ) and the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) yesterday welcomed the Government's decision to roll back the general consumption tax (GCT) on books and printed materials, excluding newspapers.
"Very elated. We are quite happy that the Government has returned to the full support of literacy and education," said Franklin McGibbon, president of the BIAJ.
McGibbon told The Gleaner that one book store had started collecting GCT on books, upon the directive of the Ministry of Finance.
Reimbursements
He noted that that store was in the process of removing the tax on books.
As it relates to persons who have already bought books, which were taxed, McGibbon said the member assured that they could be reimbursed, once a receipt was submitted.
Meanwhile, Doran Dixon, president of the JTA, commended the Government for the decision.
