Western Bureau:

St James teams Granville Jaguars and Inner-City Avalanche both came away with good wins over the weekend, as action started in Zone Two of the 2009 Jamaica Basketball Association (JABA)/Jamaica Public Parish League with two games.

On Saturday, Avalanche scored a good 64-54 win over Hopewell Vipers of Hanover at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts while on Sunday, Granville Jaguars upstaged Westmoreland's Sav Hawks 88-80 at the Llandilo Complex in Savanna-la-Mar.

Interesting start

"It was a pretty interesting start to the season and if things continue this way, it should be an exciting season," said Deon Williams, the competition's coordinator.

"There is no question that basketball is alive and well in this region," he added.

In Saturday's game, the Galton Taylor-coached Avalanche were all the rage, winning three of the four quarters in the game 18-12, 15-11 and 20-13.

The Vipers, who were generally lacking in intensity for most of the game, won the third quarter 18-11 behind a bold effort to slow down Avalanche.

Outstanding player

Cleon Morgan was the outstanding player for Avalanche, scoring a game-high 21 points. Chayne Topey and Dane Morris both contributed well, supporting with 15 and nine points, respectively.

Demar McGreggor, with nine points, and Cecil Cole and Craig Dorman, with eight points each, were the top performers for Vipers.

On Sunday, Granville Jaguars easily brushed aside Sav Hawks as after losing the first two quarters 16-13 and 19-17, they dominated the final two quarters, which they won 22-17 and 31-18.
