Fraser aiming to run faster at Invitational

Reigning Olympic 100-metre champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser, is confident that she will improve on her UTech Classic performance, when she runs at the Ministry of Sports, Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association Jamaica Invitational, at the National Stadium this evening.

"I think my preparations are going on fine," said the 22-year-old sprinter.

"I was out for about two or three weeks, but I am back on schedule now and I think I am doing pretty well so far," she said.

At the recently concluded UTech Classic, Fraser lost to Rosemarie White (23.01) in the 200 metres, placing second in 23.44 seconds.

She explained that she was comfortable with her performance, based on her circumstances.

"I am not sure if I will run in the 100m or 200m, but either one I am sure I will do pretty well against the other athletes that are lined up."

Fraser, who trained for the Olympics with team-mate Asafa Powell, became the first Jamaican woman in history to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres sprint, clocking 10.78 to win in Beijing.

She alludes respecting everyone as a competitor and was not fazed by any particular athlete.

Proper race

"Once international athletes get on the track, they are going to compete and they are going to do so to the best of their ability. Once you are in a lane and lined up to run, everyone is a competitor for me," Fraser said.

Fraser's Olympic time was the second fastest 100 metres ever recorded by a Jamaican woman, a mere 0.04 seconds shy of Merlene Ottey's 10.74 record.

She said she will not be targeting any particular time at the meet but will aim to do her best.

"I am not targeting any specific time. I am just going out there to execute a proper race and, once this is accomplished, then we will see what happens," she said.
