Woman freed of manslaughter
A St Catherine woman who was charged with manslaughter after colliding with a motorcyclist was freed in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Thursday.

She is Tameka Williams, a 28-year-old aeronautical information officer, of Portmore, St Catherine.

Williams was charged for the death of 45-year-old mechanic Norman Petrekin, also of Portmore.

The Crown called three witnesses, including Charmaine Petrekin, who identified her husband's body.

An accident

The court heard that on June 8, 2007, about 5:30 p.m., Williams was driving a Nissan Sunny motor car along Augusta Drive in Portmore, when she collided with Petrekin's motorcycle, which was coming from the opposite direction.

Petrekin suffered multiple head injuries. He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Williams was charged following an investigation by the St Catherine South Police Traffic Department.

Attorneys-at-law Earl Hamilton and Lancelot Clarke Jr, who represented Williams, contended that it was Petrekin who lost control of his powerful Honda 600 motorbike.

The jury of seven women retired for about an hour and returned with a not-guilty verdict.

Justice Gloria Smith was the presiding judge.
