"I think that too many people believe that they have to be paid to make a contribution to the social and cultural development of the country," Charles told a gathering at Jamaica House during the launch of Labour Day 2009, which is to be observed on Monday, May 25.
This year's theme, 'Volunteerism, Intervention, Beautification, Em-powerment for Success (VIBES)', is meant to energise and empower the nation at a time when many are grappling with the effects of the global financial meltdown.
Charles reminded the audience that Jamaicans were a great people with a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, despite the challenges. He encouraged Jamaicans to 'Ketch a Vibes' and come out to help build their nation on Labour Day.
"The greatest asset of any nation is the spirit of its people and the greatest threat to the security of any nation is the break down of that spirit," he said.
The 2009 national projects are Hospital Spruce-Up in St Ann's Bay, St Ann, the multi-purpose court in Riversdale, St Catherine, and Tissue Culture Ginger Project at Top Alston, Clarendon.
