I do appreciate and celebrate the memory of Paul Bogle and our ancestors who marched from Stony Gut to Spanish Town to highlight their concerns to the colonial government.
I must, however, question whether Jamaicans think similar demonstrations are effective today to change unpopular policies of the Government or organisations. As a nation, we ought to think intelligently and create strategic and innovative ways to make an opinions and requests known which do not breach the Solid Waste, Public Order, and Road Traffic acts or create more economic and social damage for the country.
What do you say to your child who cannot go to school because he or she sees a parent igniting fires in the streets and throwing missiles at the members of the security forces and firefighters who brave the audacity of our nonsense and attempt to restore order to our streets?
Peaceful demonstration
The PNPYO must be commended for displaying to our misguided demonstrators across the nation what a peaceful demonstration is and how effective it can be. Though, they might not be satisfied with the response of the prime minister, their concerns were definitely given audience and a response given. They also, unlike many Jamaicans, did not only criticise the tax package and policies of the Government, but also were armed with suggestions to ease our economic crises. As a nation, we need to emulate such a demonstration of patriotism and professionalism.
