Tech SAVVY: Rating the Nokia N95 8GB
Payton H. Wilmott, Gleaner Writer

Nokia, the electronics company versatile enough to give the world such classics as the 3310 and the infamous flashlight phone, has done it again. You might fancy getting your hands on the crown jewel, Nokia N95 8GB.

The Things Kings Are Made Of

The black box of doom, as some of my friends call it, is an all-in-one device that has almost everything a person on the move would want. The N95 8GB comes packed with features that make you wonder if it's really a phone. Let's see what's under the shell.

Nokia N95 features

8GB of internal memory

5 megapixels with auto focus and flash

Secondary camera for video calling

Built-in wireless LAN

Accelerometer sensor for auto rotation

Bluetooth with A2DP

Infrared port

Stereo speakers

3.5mm headphone audio jack

FM radio

GPS (Global Positioning System)

Document viewer (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF)

MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+/WMA player

TV-out (television output)

Push-to-talk

This list only covers the main features for the phone. Many of the secondary functions like the bar-code scanner couldn't be listed because of time and space.

Half of these features don't work in Jamaica, do they?

Well, I used to say the same thing until I tested out an N95 8GB on the Claro 3G network and I was amazed to find out that everything works. I have successfully tracked myself travelling from home to work and back again. Emails come straight to the phone once you set up your account properly.

Another plus is that it facilitates video calls at will. I've always wondered when we would have the ability to do video calls and I'm ecstatic that the wait is over.

What stands out

This has the best five-megapixel camera I have ever seen on a mobile and it video-records like a mini camcorder. Second, this phone plays music perfectly with its built-in stereo speakers. Also, the dual slide design is undeniably unique.

Closing thoughts

People love and trust Nokia phones, and the N95 8GB is one of the best it has on offer. There are only two drawbacks: it's formidable price tag - $65,000+ tax - and its bulkiness.
