The Lions Club of North St Catherine last week celebrated 40 years of service in the development of communities in Linstead and its environs.

Speaking at an anniversary dinner held at the Lions Civic Centre in Bog Walk, anthropologist Dr Grace Camille Munroe said Jamaica's prevailing economic conditions should inspire persons to serve with greater enthusiasm. She encouraged members of the club to cling to the belief that small groups could spark significant change.

In commending the team, she pointed out the importance of community aid in the development of society.

"Working to develop a community initiates fairness, equality, participation and continuing learning among the group of people," she said.

Munroe also stated that the Lions, an international charity, should continue to invest in education.

The organisation helped found Charlemont High School and has continued to contribute to its development.

Economic growth

Also in recognition of the four decades of service, business persons of Linstead were provided with a wealth of information at the forum.

Addressing the audience, Heather Wilson, consultant at the Corporate Finance Broker Unit at the Private Sector Development Programme, said entrepreneurship played an important role in the economic growth and development of the nation.

"The importance is such that entrepreneurs contribute significantly to the gross domestic product of the country and no doubt activities from entrepreneurs are greatly needed for Jamaica's progression and economic growth," Wilson explained.
