Spragga Benz reaches out

FOR DEEJAY Spragga Benz, Saturday's Life Fest show at the Back Yaad venue in St Andrew is not just another live event. He says it is his way of helping to improve an area where Jamaican youth are struggling.

"Yuh have a lot of students out there who have promise but not getting the help, and that's what we want to do," Spragga Benz told Tidbits Thursday. "Education is the most important thing, without it I couldn't write a song."

Live Fest features a top-notch bill including Sizzla, Queen Ifrica, Jah Cure, Damien 'Junior Gong' Marley, Stephen Marley, Chino, Wayne Wonder and High Octane.

The show is promoted by the Carlisle Foundation, named for Benz's 17-year-old son, Carlton Grant Jr, who was controversially killed by police in downtown Kingston last August.

"Wi going tek the opportunity to highlight him life 'cause he was a youth with promise," Benz said.

This educational drive is nothing new to Spragga Benz, a Camper-down High School graduate who found fame in the 1990s on the strength of songs like Hand Inna The Air and Things a Gwaan.

Over 10 years ago, he started the Stay In School programme which assisted needy students in his hometown of Franklin Town.

The case involving Carlton Grant Jr is still before the courts. His father says he will allow the law to take its course.

"It's not easy for me but it's a part of life. I have to live wid it but wi have to move on," he said.
