Money woes no threat to bacchanal

Revellers at this year's Bacchanal Jamaica Road March refused to allow the gloomy economic climate to dampen their spirits as they journeyed through the Corporate Area yesterday.

Things got heated for the hundreds of costumed revellers, who took to the streets for the march which began in Mona and ended at Mas Camp in New Kingston, as they gyrated to music blaring through speakers on trucks leading the procession.

Not even policemen dapperly dressed in uniform and riding their motorcycles could escape the young women who skilfully waylaid them and danced away.

"I think carnival is still in very good shape despite the economic meltdown," said reveller Paul Whittingham, who travelled from Montego Bay, St James.

"People are enjoying themselves and, it does not matter how hard times get, everyone who loves the celebration looks forward to it each year.''

Whittingham added that, having gone to J'Ouvert, Jokers' Wild and other sessions on the calendar, it was clear to him that carnival holds a special place in revellers' hearts, even if there is little or no money to spend.
