St Ann Club lift Browne Mem Cup
The St Ann Polo Club team defeated the very young Kingston Polo Club team by eight goals to three-and-a-half to win the annual renewal of the Tonka Browne Memorial Cup at Drax Hall, St Ann, on Thursday.

Representing the winning team were Rory Vernon, Billy Vernon, Jordan Samuda and Lesley Fong-Yee. The Kingston Polo Club team comprised Jonathan Dougall, Michelle Subaran, Rachel Turner and Sam Wates. The losing team received a goal and a half handicap from the very strong St Ann team.

The Cup was presented by Hanover Polo Club in 1976 in memory of Tonka Browne, a promising young player who died of cancer. It is played for by the junior players of each Club on handicap.

St Ann led early in the first chukka when Fong-Yee converted a 30-yard penalty before Samuda carried the ball up the field and scored.

Rory Vernon was on fire in the second chukka. He stopped a 60-yard penalty that was going out and slotted it in, then scored again from another acute angle.

However, Kingston then started to fight back as Dougall picked up a loose ball and drove from almost the centre of the field to the goal.

Turner then carried the ball almost the length of the field and scored to put them within half-a-goal in the third chukka.

St ann back in the lead

However, Vernon then answered with another, picking up a pass from the throw in, while Fong-Yee put St Ann back firmly in the lead by the end of the chukka.

Vernon and Fong-Yee scored again in the last chukka from penalties as Kingston squandered the chances that they had, enabling St Ann to take home the Tonka Browne Cup.

Tammy Browne, Tonka's niece, was on hand for the game and congratulated the winning team afterwards.

Meanwhile, a select female team defeated their male counterparts 4-2 in the annual 'Battle of the Sexes' match at the Kingston Polo Club, Caymanas Estates, last Saturday. The winning team was captained by Fong-Yee and included Lucy Taylor and Tamara Vestey from England and Mery Jene from Argentina. Representing the men were Jordan Samuda, Shane Chin, Junior Chin and Troy Brennan.

The Jamaica Polo Association's Hurlingham Cup will be played for today at the St Ann Polo Club, Drax Hall starting at 4:30 p.m.

Defending champions, Kingston Polo Club, will be represented by Paul Lalor, James Robertson, Jorge Donovan and Marc Melville, while Andy Vernon, Kurt Chin, Paul Chin and Craig Russell will take the field for the St Ann Polo Club team.
