UWI selects reggae's top 100

Jimmy Cliff

TODAY, a panel of aficionados will gather at the Undercroft at the University of the West Indies' (UWI) Mona campus to present what they believe are the top-100 reggae songs recorded between 1957 and 2007.

That period marks 50 years of Jamaican popular music.

Dr Clinton Hutton, a senior lecturer in the department of government, said the panel comprised musicians, radio disc jockeys and sound system selectors. Each made their selections based on record sales, airplay and how 'their' songs influenced musical trends.

Hutton hopes the UWI's top-100 reggae songs will ultimately be compiled for a box set.
