Elderly fêted in Spanish Town
Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

Tears of joy ran down the cheeks of a number of needy persons in St Catherine, who were fêted in Munamar Square, Spanish Town, on Easter Sunday with music and food provided by a businessman from the parish.

"Thank you Lord that someone remember me because I don't know what I would do today, but you make a way for us," said 79-year-old Merdella Christie, whose feelings were echoed by several others who spoke between laughter and tears.

The more than 300 people were drawn from several communities throughout St Catherine.

They were given a hot meal in the form of dinner while bun and cheese was also on hand, served by the Red Cross. Crazy Jim provided ice cream.

Several people, headed by Spanish Town Mayor Dr Andrew Wheatley and Olivia Grange, member of parliament for St Catherine Central, took time out to endorse the activities.

Wheatley and Grange said more efforts must be placed on caring for the indigent in the society.

Vincent Clarke, CEO of Munamar Supermarket and Wholesale, said the event was planned out of a collaboration between himself and Grange. He said he received a great feeling from touching the lives of so many.

''It is good that we are giving back to the elderly and indigent. They really need all the help they can get," he said. "I am also thankful to the member of parliament for her help. This can only bring more blessings.''
