Disappointing Cabinet reshuffle
The Editor, Sir:

The much talked about Cabinet reshuffle has finally happened. As an ardent supporter of Mr Golding and the Jamaica Labour Party, I must express my deep dis-appointment with the changes.

It was clear that Mr Derrick Smith's health would have to make him go. Why not remerge the Ministry of Mining, Energy and Telecommunications as it was before, and leave Clive Mullings in place? Was he not doing a good job before the split? Is it because he dared to fire a key supporter why he was sent packing?

It was clear that Senator Trevor MacMillan had to be replaced. Col MacMillan has not said or done anything since his appointment, to indicate that he can give the required leadership in the Ministry of National Security. In fact, Col MacMillan is best remembered for some inane statements about 'dons' and his stated willingness to go back to playing golf.

But Mr Golding did not have to go outside to find a suitable minister of national security. Senator Arthur Williams, who has been the state minister, has been working effectively in that Ministry. From the outset of Mr Golding's Government, Senator Williams has been the one who appeared to be giving leadership in that ministry.

Why now bypass him for Senator Dwight Nelson? Does Mr Golding believe that it requires 'a great communicator' to lead the Ministry of National Security, or does it require a calm and steady hand with demonstrated ability?

Mr Prime Minister, you have got it wrong.

I am etc.,

B. Wallace
