Wolmer's Julian Forte ... won the U-17 long jump.

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC):

Advertising their trademark blistering speed, defending champions Jamaica swept all sprint relays while securing more than half of the gold medals on offer on day three of the 38th Carifta Games on Sunday.

Fans at the George Odlum Stadium witnessed six championship records, four going to the Jamaicans, who closed Sunday with 44 medals - 24 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze.

Two of the Jamaicans' meet records came in the Under-17 sprint relays.

The Jamaican girls sped to victory over T&T (46.44) in 45.05 seconds, erasing their own previous 2005 mark of 45.43, and their U-17 boys clocked 40.76 to defeat The Bahamas (41.89) while slicing more than a 10th of a second off T&T's nine-year-old mark of 40.87.

Quality performances

Jamaica's U-20 boys won their sprint relay in 40.05 over Barbados (40.62) and their girls stopped the clock at 45.04 to land the U-20 sprint relay gold over The Bahamas (45.43) to record their first sprint relay sweep since 2006.

On another riveting day with quality performances, the Jamaicans struck gold in 12 of the 19 finals decided.

T&T clutched another gold and championship record Sunday afternoon when Quincy Wilson hurled the discus 55.67 metres to smash a six-year-old mark of 55.20m by Eric Mathias of the British Virgin Islands.

The effort gave Wilson the capture of both discus Carifta records as he also holds the U-17 mark at 52.79 metres.

The Jamaican pair of Travis Smikle (54.42) and Chad Wright (50.62) had to settle for silver and bronze, respectively, behind Wilson.

T&T were also strong in the U-17 boys' javelin with a one-two finish through Keshorn Walcott (59.30m) and Andwele Korede (53.59) and they also took the boys' U-20 triple jump with Elton Walcott posting a winning effort of 15.61 metres.

Rochelle Farquharson of STETHS set a meet record in the U17 triple jump.

The Jamaicans picked up a cluster of field gold medals when Julian Forte took the U-17 boys' long jump at 7.25 metres over T&T's Atiba Wright (6.73m), while Micara Vassell (14.03m) dominated the U-20 girls' shot over Hilenn James (13.80) of T&T.
