Commendable first step
The Editor, Sir:

The decision made by the prime minister to take a salary cut and to forgo a seven per cent increase is a welcomed move, for which he should be highly commended in light of the current economic crisis.

This signals the kind of leadership that is essential for a country like ours, so desperately in need of persons who will be willing to make sacrifices for the good of others.

I sincerely hope that such a move will inspire his colleagues and fellow parliamentarians to do likewise, as he has invited them so to do, in the interest of our nation.

One is hoping also that this symbolic gesture will somewhat temper the militancy which exists among public sector workers who are currently seeking pay increases.

I am, etc.,
