It appears as though the commercial banking sector in Jamaica just does not get it. They continue to boast of earning huge profits, while their customers continue to suffer the pain of having to pay exorbitant fees for everything.
One would have thought in this period of great economic crisis facing everyone, the banks would move towards giving some concession on these fees to help cushion the blows to their customers. While I understand that they do not have much flexibility over interest charges since this is in part a product of the central bank's monetary policies, there is no reason why the banks cannot ease up on the fees.
When will these institutions realise that if their customers go under, and many of them will, during this period, their own operations will become unsustainable. The situation now in the United States is a clear example of this.
