Manchioneal look to avenge defeat
Versel Thompson, Gleaner Writer

MANCHIONEAL will seek to avenge their 2-1 loss against Eagle Strikers when both teams meet in the Eastern Confederation Super League football competition at Carder Park tomorrow at 3 p.m.

In today's lone game, Rising Stars battle Port Morant at Drax Hall, while in other matches tomorrow, leaders St Ann Bauxite host York Sports Club at Kaiser Sports Club, Axum entertain Star Cosmos at Westmoreland Oval, while Brazil host Bath at Drax Hall.

St Ann Bauxite, with 32 points and York, on 31, are virtually assured a place in the two-leg semi-final round. Given that position, Manchioneal with 26 points along with Star Cosmos, Bath and Brazil, will be the teams on the hunt for the remaining two spots up for grabs.

With only one more game remaining after this one, coach Brenton 'Barry' Wilson is optimistic Manchioneal can rise to the occasion and secure all three points to advance ahead of their nearest rivals.

"We have worked tremendously hard to be where we are today," Wilson said. "We are hoping our hard work can pay off this weekend, as we will be trying to get all three points as we hunt a semi-final place."

Meanwhile, Eagle Strikers, along with Port Morant and Axum, are battling to avoid relegation to their respective parish Major League competitions and coach Dean Weston is aware of the possibilities if they lose this weekend, having been beaten 4-2 by Axum last weekend.

Weston, who is still uncertain of his team's chemistry, has been lamenting the lack of training by his players "...who just turn up at matches where they are expecting to get a game".

"We will be putting our best foot forward and hope we can take the game away from them (Manchioneal)," he concluded.

Meanwhile, in the Portland Western Union Major League first-leg semi-finals, Breastworks battle Norwich Community Club today at Carder Park, while Ujama Community Club host Progressive FC at Hector's River tomorrow. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
