Give us music for the mind
The Editor, Sir:

It appears that the heat is cooling down for or against the decision made by the Broadcasting Commission to discourage the unhealthy messages which some of our artistes are sending out to this nation, and particularly our young people, who absorb these corrupt lyrics.

Our artistes must understand that this action is not a condemnation of them as individuals; and we know that large numbers of our people enjoy these 'below-the-belt-songs,' and much profit is gained from them. However, we adults with a conscience must think of the negative effect the lyrics have on the minds of our young people.

It must be remembered that every song has a message, and with the speedy decline in human conduct in this country from what was known as good manners, to a situation which defies classification, diligent care must be taken regarding the messages we send out in our songs.

big money

Naturally, music by itself, which is a "series of harmonious tones or sounds," cannot corrupt anyone, and it is older than the human race. It does not only entertain, but helps to build character. Furthermore, with the great financial reward which comes from it when a particular style is approved by citizens and business organisations, many of our young people and adults see music as a channel for gaining a career, and big money.

But the importance of music to the human mind cannot be over-emphasised. Every individual, unless hearing impaired, will move to the pulse or sound of music. It is creative, inspires and also enriches life. Above all things, it releases tensions and unites hostile gangs. Indeed, it is spiritual soul energy.

So, then, because music deals with historical and current situations in human life, is it unreasonable to ask our talented artistes to lift the standard of their lyrics and give us, among their presentations, music to cheer the heart and soul, music to make us loving and kind?

Give us music to make us united and bold for the truth! Let it flow unhindered, giving peace of mind!

I am etc,
