PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

A stoppage time goal by substitute Khaleem Hyland snatched an important draw for Trinidad and Tobago against Honduras in their CONCACAF final round World Cup qualifier on Saturday night.

The Soca Warriors were heading for a very damaging defeat at the Hasely Crawford Stadium after veteran Carlos Pavon struck early in the second half for visiting Honduras, but Hyland grabbed an equaliser moments before the final whistle for a share of the points.

After two rounds of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago - aiming for back-to-back World Cup qualification - are without a win.

With two drawn results, they are on two points to be joint fourth on points with El Salvador, who held the United States of America (USA) to a 2-2 draw in San Salvador on Saturday night.

Goalless first-half

After a goalless first-half, Pavon struck with a headed goal in the 51st minute.

T&T pressed for an equaliser and failed to convert until near the end although the 40-year-old star, Russell Latapy, had come on in the 65th minute to inject more creativity in the home team's offence.

Hyland found the equaliser in the dying moments with a low shot.

The Soca Warriors, who reached a World Cup finals for the first time when they appeared in Germany in 2006, played without captain and striker Dwight Yorke, Chris Birchall and Clayton Ince, all out through suspension.

Pardo

After playing both of their opening games on the road, Honduras get to return home on Wednesday to face Mexico, who beat Costa Rica 2-0 in Mexico City on Saturday to end a four-game winless streak in qualifying.

Next stop

T&T will travel to Tennessee on Wednesday for their next qualifier, against the United States.

Veteran Frankie Hejduk scored one goal and set up another in the final 13 minutes and rallied the USA to a dramatic 2-2 draw Saturday night with El Salvador, who had gone two up through Eliseo Quintanilla (15th) and Cristian Castillo (72nd).

Hejduk, a veteran of the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, sent in a cross for Jozy Altidore to net a 77th minute header and then scored with a header from a corner kick in the 88th to give the USA four points, to lead the six-team final round group.

Mexico and Costa Rica share second on three points each.
