She is a fine example of women excelling in a male-dominated arena where the odds are mostly against them. When Dollis Campbell decided that she wanted to start her own transport and tours company, she bore the brunt of a lot of sexist comments and discouragement from her male counterparts.
There were doubts that she could effectively manage a business in such a male-dominated area.
"This type of business is dominated by men, especially the transport side of it. I faced a lot of prejudice even from male employees because I am a woman." Not willing to settle for less, Campbell was not deterred by the prejudice she faced and continued on her path.
Today, having started in 1992, Jam Venture Tours has been making its mark, providing services in tours and transportation. In 2008, Jam Venture Tours received the Jamaica Hospitality and Tourism Award for Best Transportation Service Provider.
This managing director knows what it means to be well-rounded and is not afraid to take on tasks outside of her core responsibilities. "I do everything here. It is very important to be able to operate everything because emergencies do come up. There are times I will take on the duties of a driver and transport guests around and also act as a tour guide."
Having had personal experiences, Campbell says women still face a lot of bias in certain occupations. "When you have to behave strong and powerful, you will hear all sorts of things. Some men are just not used to taking orders from women: they don't know how to appreciate it," she said. Still, she says the change when more men will become comfortable with women leaders is inevitable. "More and more women are taking over in many areas and, as you can see, even in universities here more women are studying in most of the disciplines offered. Acceptance will come eventually."
