Linette Vassell

Linette Vassell has dedicated her years of service to working on gender-related issues pertaining to women. She is currently the chairperson for Women's Resource and Outreach Centre (WROC), an organisation that aims to provide services and programmes to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and youth. WROC also caters to the development of inner-city women.

She is also a member of the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action, Gender and Water Alliance.

She is currently working in the rural water and sanitation programme of the Ministry of Water and Housing. Vassell is also involved in writing on issues of gender and governance and especially looking at the challenges to secure women's empowerment in the context of political decentralisation.

For her, the challenge she faces in her line of work is getting the system to respond to the needs of the communities.

"Things just take too long; there are too many hoops and loops that the ordinary people have to go through to secure their rights in our society," said Vassell.

However, she said what is rewarding is to see individuals grow and empower themselves.

In accomplishing anything, there are usually obstacles but Vassell has been balancing the many aspects of life, husband, children, career and voluntary work, plus finding time for herself. She said over the years her husband has been very supportive and much of what is seen as her achievements are because her husband has been a good, decent and caring partner over the years. Her daughters have also played a vital role in her success.

Vassell is the recipient of several awards, including from Webster Memorial for her leadership in Christian education; the Whitehorses Farmers' Group in St Thomas for support in their development and from Women's Media Watch.
