Dr Blossom O'Meally-Nelson created history when she became Jamaica's first female post master general. She also served as the chief executive officer of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica. During that time she spearheaded many initiatives aimed at transforming the island's postal services.
Admitting that it was not always smooth to achieve success and meet her targets, O'Meally-Nelson said she rode the high waves strategically. "I did it through constant dialogue with the state and trade unions. We had to work together," she said.
Going with the flow is pretty much how O'Meally-Nelson ended up in the post she held for six years. "Never did I think I would end up there. But when the Government announced the post, I just applied, especially because I had the background in human resources."
Before that, she worked as a librarian, did a four-year stint in missionary work in the Turks and Caicos Islands and also spent 16 years as an educator. Following those years she took up offers to head the National Development Foundation of Jamaica as well as The Jamaica Agricultural Development Foundation.
Today she works in a family-operated business as the chief operating officer of Aeromar Group of Companies. It is something she seriously considered doing, which led to the end of her active life in postal services.
The mother of three says women must, at all times, work towards their goals and not allow themselves to be used. "Women have so many responsibilities and are expected to meet so many demands. We must, at all times, clarify our mission and move towards it or else we will end up being used and always serving."
O'Meally-Nelson has been the recipient of the Order of Distinction, Commander Class, for outstanding public service and continues to serve in numerous associations. She is also the founding director of the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica and the founding chairman of the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust.
