Carmen Latty: Nigeria

Carmen Latty is the executive director of the pioneering Roemichs International School in Kwara State, Nigeria. Roemichs is a school for early childhood, primary and secondary education which is set on nurturing a new generation, ready to face global challenges and be active citizens in a rapidly changing world.

Adventure and curiosity carried Latty to Nigeria 17 years ago.

"I came to spread the gospel of great Jamaica. Many Mico men like Aston Taylor and Dudley Thompson had excelled in various fields, especially education. I had ambition to be the Mico Woman to beat or equal their record," states Latty.

Her life work in education is her passion. As she recalls the adage 'Educate a child and you have educated a nation', Latty tells of how over 15,000 children have come under her influence directly through her work in educational institutions in Nigeria. At Roemichs, Latty constantly strives to raise the bar in quality assurance in education and facility management.

During her time in Nigeria, Latty has become affectionately known as Lady Carmen among the communities in Agbara Estate, Ogun State, where she lives. She has been offered (and rejected) several chieftancy positions but prefers to volunteer her time and resources to street children and other needy people when she can.

A proud Jamaican, Latty believes every Jamaican has a Nigerian in him or her. She says her time in Africa has been challenging, meaningful, frightening, exciting and fulfilling.

Latty cites her mother, Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana as women who inspire her because they dared to be different and make the difference.
