Caribbean Games to be smoke-free
The Local Organising Committee of Caribbean Games 2009, in partnership with the Bloomberg Tobacco Control Project and the Cancer Society of Trinidad and Tobago, has declared that the inaugural Caribbean Games 2009 will be a smoke-free event.

"None can deny the indelible impact the power sport has. Caribbean Games 2009 feels that the opportunity cannot be missed to promote the highest ideals of sport participation in every way," declared André Collins, the Games' medical and antidoping services coordinator, as they announced their partnership with the Bloomberg Project in promoting the smoke-free event through the local SAVE campaign.

This campaign is in keeping not only with the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs policy of no smoking at any of its sporting venues, but also with that of all International Olympic Committee (IOC)-sanctioned events since Calgary 1988 in collaboration with respective organising committees.

President of the IOC, Dr. Jacques Rogge said: "Sports and physical activity are deeply incompatible with smoking and we also firmly believe that sports can serve as an instrument of preventive education to youth to avoid unhealthy behaviours."

To show their support and solidarity with this campaign and to promote a smoke-free Caribbean Games were living legend, national hero and Caribbean Games Ambassador, Hasely Crawford and Trinidad and Tobago's volleyball star Sean Morrison.
