TALK ABOUT boots and most Jamaican women conjure up images of femme fatales sliding down a pole. Casual or dressy, flat or heeled, a pair of boots is one of the most versatile footwear weapons you can have in your wardrobe arsenal. They were made to complement an outfit, the same way sugar glazes a delightful donut.

But like everything else, mixin' and matchin' can be a daredevil dalliance or a suicide mission. Don't let the fashion police pull you over for couture crimes.

Saturday Life gives you the mini manual on being too cute to boot. For the love of fashion, ladies, wear your boots with grace, style and sex appeal. Relish your foot fetish!

What works with what

  • Mid-calf boots

Play with unique cuts that accentuate your calf muscles and make you stand out. Very sexy. A pair of black knee-high boots with a bit of a heel can multitask from the office to an afterwork social event with ease, and knee-high flats are a legit fit for casual or preppy skirts.

Remember, if you're bent on tucking your jeans into boots, skinny-leg pants are ideal for avoiding the puffed-up effect.

  • Ankle boots

Whether they're flat or heeled, ankle boots and long skirts are a classic combination. Experiment with tights if you're brave enough to transform your ensemble from clunky to funky. Avoid wearing ankle boots with cropped pants and tights, pencil skirts and skirts below the knee, shorts and capris.

  • Tall boots

For knee-high boots, wear skirts that fall between a few inches below your knees and a few inches above.

A skirt that is long enough to cover the top of your boots is one of the most flattering items you can pair with tall boots.

And if you have what it takes to wear skinny jeans, you're in the enviable position to tuck them into anything from dressy heeled boots to casual flat styles. Don't make anyone think you've just escaped from the fashion loony bin by pairing your tall boots with baggy or pleated jeans and pants, or shorts.

  • Fur-lined boots

Narrow, fur-lined lace-up tall boots are a sweet accessory to short, flirty skirts. For a casual style, try wearing knee socks and allowing them to peek slightly over the top of your boot.

    Boot basics

✓ Avoid wearing boots that don't harmonise with your outfit.

✓ Don't wear boots with bare legs. Tights, nylons, or even flesh-coloured fishnet stockings help bridge the thermal and fashion gap between your knees and your hemline.

✓ Ensure that the boot fits snugly around your leg; if the boot gapes open, you may need to have it altered.

✓ While most organisations don't specify what kind of shoes can be worn, they do have rules dictating skirts and pants, limiting your fashion options for boot appeal. But if your workplace has a pretty laid-back, laissez-aller culture, unleash those legs.
